The Chronic Illness Terrain Map

There’s a link between high performance and chronic illness that few people are talking about.

For high-functioning leaders, the survival adaptations that built extraordinary lives of meaning and purpose can eventually begin shaping the terrain of physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Chronic Illness Terrain Map explores five high-functioning survival leadership architectures and the chronic illness terrain associated with each.

When Survival Becomes a Leadership Strategy

Anticipation.
Hyper-responsibility.
Relentless achievement.
Emotional control.
Constant analysis.
Attunement to everyone else.

But when the body remains under prolonged stress, the cumulative physiological burden—known as allostatic load—is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes.

Much of the conventional conversation revolves around managing, chasing, and suppressing symptoms.

Yet symptoms are sacred signals—something to listen to and attune to.

The inquiry becomes:

What is this asking me to see and understand?

And:

Who is this asking me to become?

The Chronic Illness Terrain Map is not a diagnostic tool or a suggestion that a psychological pattern causes a particular disease.

Chronic illness is multifactorial.

The invitation is to examine a relationship that is rarely explored:

How the strategies that help leaders function under pressure can intersect with physical, mental, and emotional health.

Inside the map

  • The five survival leadership architectures

  • The physical, psychological, and behavioral terrain associated with each

  • The adaptations that can become costly

  • Questions for deeper self-inquiry

  • A different way of understanding the relationship between survival, health, and purpose

Who you become through healing is who the life you’ve built—and the mission you’ve devoted it to—needs you to be.

Healing is a commitment to defy odds.
Not to dull the noise of pain.
But to turn up the volume of life.
And to feel More human. More alive. More free.

The Chronic Illness Terrain Map is an invitation into that inquiry.

About Greg Wieting

For over 23 years, Greg Wieting has helped leaders carrying consequential missions—founders, entrepreneurs, and creatives—heal developmental and complex trauma, PTSD, and the chronic illness and mental health challenges that can emerge from them.

He is the founder of Obsidian, a 9-month initiatory incubator for leaders whose influence has outgrown the identity that built it—forging undivided, self-possessed presence in those carrying consequential missions.

Greg practices The BodyTalk System, a comprehensive healthcare system unique in its ability to restore coherence across body, mind, and spirit.

His work integrates advanced studies in trauma, PTSD, and neuroscience with somatic and mindfulness-based practices. It also includes training in systems theory, complex adaptive systems, epigenetics, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and contemplative traditions.

Grounded in Advaita Vedanta and nondual inquiry, his approach addresses not only the resolution of physiological and psychological stress, but the deeper deconditioning of identity structures that organize perception, behavior, and power.

Shaped by Indigenous healing traditions, consciousness studies, and liberation-focused facilitation, Wieting brings a precise understanding of how socialized trauma and systemic pressures shape physical, mental, and emotional health, leadership, and the capacity to act with clarity, courage, and consequence.

What Clients Say

“Working with Greg has played a huge role in my healing journey, my overall health, and has allowed me to grow as a leader.

As a doctor, this was a big clue to me that I needed to work with someone who understood how the physical, emotional, and spiritual pieces worked together.

Greg is an amazing healer and helps guide your nervous system to a place of rest and safety. I am so very grateful for the work he is offering to the world and look forward to continuing my healing journey with him into the future!”

– Dr. April Blake

“Working with Greg has been transformational. My healing is now deeply intertwined with a sense of purpose.

My body was ridden with pain. Past trauma had manifested physically and affected me daily in the form of anxiety, intense headaches, and joint pain.

Today, I understand that my body is my greatest resource and guidepost. I’ve developed a profound trust in myself to navigate the world and whatever comes my way.”

– Cara Zamora Palanca

“At the time, I thought I was seeking Greg’s help to get out of pain and return to my normal life as a mom and career woman. I came away from my work with Greg with a complete paradigm shift about the physical body and how healing happens.

With his calm, gentle presence and wise, careful words, Greg held space for me to process trauma and move through shame that were nowhere in my conscious mind when I met him.

My work with Greg has transformed my life and my relationship with illness and suffering in more positive ways than I can capture in writing. He has given me the gift of tapping into my higher self and inner wisdom, which I can now call upon as I continue to move through life’s challenges and transitions.

He embodies true integrity and will undoubtedly connect you to your full healing potential.”

– Barb Rogers

“When I met Greg, I was a social worker experiencing chronic pain, compassion fatigue, and self-doubt, as I was confused about my own mental health and unable to rest in my body.

Working with Greg has provided what I was unable to find in countless therapists, doctors, gurus, self-help books, and “spiritual” communities. It has helped me connect the dots of my healing in my own time and taught me to recognize unhealthy patterns that have historically kept me stuck in a cycle of perpetual suffering.

Working with Greg allows me to be autonomous in my learning while also being seen and heard in community. The feedback I receive enables me to grow and challenges me to keep forging my path. I am now able to create and embody a safe container to experience a wide range of emotions with more presence and compassion. My relationships are healthier and filled with more honesty and heart-centered connection.”
