Essential Oils For Self Care
Essential oils are concentrated extracts from the seeds, bark, stems, leaves, roots and flowers of plants. The therapeutic benefits are many and unique for each type of oil.
I’ve been using Essential Oils to support my own health for over a decade. Just over a year ago I decided to incorporate Essential Oils into my BodyTalk and Reiki practice. Clients absolutely love how the oils help them integrate the benefits of their sessions and take the healing deeper.
I’ve found the oils help the body process emotion and trauma and support the plasticity of the brain. This allows us to form new associations and behaviors to find greater balance as we heal. In BodyTalk and Reiki sessions I share the oils aromatically however you can also benefit from using oils topically and some even internally.
The sense of smell elicits powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors and link to the limbic brain through the olfactory nerve. The limbic system governs emotions, behavior, and memory. Some essential oils have an invigorating and uplifting effect while others create more grounding, peace and calm.
Essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble. This means they easily penetrate the skin and are great for topical use. Using a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, helps with absorption and improves distribution throughout the body. This also helps decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin.
Certain essential oils can even be used internally. In fact some have a rich culinary history while others are used as dietary supplements to support a variety of healthy conditions. When you drink ginger or chamomile tea, add cilantro or parsley to your favorite dish or use vanilla in a recipe you're actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds!
When ingested, essential oils enter the blood stream through the gastrointestinal tract. From here they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily distributed to all of the organs and the brain. Then they are metabolized by the liver and other organs and excreted.
Essential oil composition is highly complex. Each possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Like with everything the appropriate dose helps to avoid toxicity and ensures the best healing response.
