Letting Down Your Guard May Be Your Greatest Defense

We are hardwired for survival. When we're in danger our primal brain either readies us for action to fight or run or we freeze for protection. The problem is we often get stuck in one or both of these emergency responses even when our safety is no longer threatened. Living in a high alert state of hyper vigilance or a numbed and dissociated state diminish our life force.

A nervous system on overdrive pumps the stress hormone cortisol through the system. High, prolonged levels of cortisol can impair cognitive function, throw off blood sugar balance, compromise endocrine function, decrease bone density and muscle tissue, increase inflammation and blood pressure and lower our immunity. 

Our very defense mechanism starts to work against us ...
